NBC Developing Reboot Of Xena: Warrior Princess

A reboot has been rumoured before, with series lead Lucy Lawless going on to debunk the idea; now NBC have confirmed that they are bringing Xena: Warrior Princess back. But it may be a reboot of the show rather than a continuation.

NBC's Bob Greenblatt confirmed "Yes, we're in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we're looking for a writer. We want to do it. I don't think it's just a continuation, but we haven't gotten that far."

His comments suggest the new version won't pick up with Lawless' Xena years after the show ended.

"I think it's a great character, and we should try to figure out how to revive it somehow. he added. "There is a deal with Sam [Raimi] and Rob Tapert to produce, and it's with NBC International."

On whether Lucy Lawless will be part of the reboot, Greenblatt confirmed, "We'd love to have Lucy [Lawless] be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn't overshadow the direction we take with it. I'm not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn't playing Xena, and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever go."

Xena: Warrior Princess ran for six seasons between 1995 and 2001 and was the arguably the more successful spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. On the news, Lawless tweeted 'If a Xena reboot gets made, it's because the fans are beautiful, hardcore nutballs who want what they want.'
