Bethany Black joins Doctor Who Series 9 - becoming the first transgender actor to appear on the show

For the first time in its half century history, Doctor Who has cast the first transgender actor - Bethany Black.

Black, who previously appeared on former Who showrunner Russell T Davies' Tofu joked "Now to sit back and wait until The Mail realises the BBC have cast an open trans lesbian in a family show."

Black's character in the show is NOT transgender and she was picked for her acting talents alone and she joins the growing list of talent that will appear throughout Peter Capaldi's second full series.

Doctor Who returns to our screens this September.

The long-running BBC TV science fiction series that started in 1963 and recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary. 2017 saw Peter Capaldi regenerate into the show's first female Doctor played by Jodie Whittaker. The Thirteenth Doctor's first season debuts in 2018, with Chris Chibnall replacing Steven Moffat as the current showrunner.
