SG:U - Subversion

In Which:

Events from the pilot start to come full circle, as new evidence circulates with regards to who told the Lucian Alliance where Icarus was…

What did I think?: Well, this is more like it! After last weeks meandering tick-based hallucination rubbish, this episode sees the pace of the show dialling up in preparation for the end of the season.

Before I go any further – I should give you a quick recap on an important character in this story – Col. Telford. I didn’t mention him at all in my Recap of SGU, mostly because he’s annoying and was earth-based; therefore any story involving him involved the annoying communication stones. But basically, he was the man-in-charge of the Icarus project, he was supposed to be the one who ended up where our heroes are, and he’s also doinking Young’s wife. I think that’s as much background as is needed.

So Rush, who’s done a communication stone swap with Telford a couple of days ago, wakes in this episode having had a vivid dream, and rushes to tell Young, who naturally doesn’t want to know. Until Rush explains that in his dream, he was Telford. You see, Telford appears to have a history of leaving little bits of memory in people who he’s switched with, as he did it with Scott earlier in the season. The point is that the dream Rush had involved a meeting with the Lucian Alliance, and handing over copies of important Icarus documents…

Young decides to swap Rush with Telford at the next available point, so that Rush can go and try and confirm or deny this idea. Unknown to Rush, however, once Rush has gone, Young uses the stones and goes to talk to General O’Neill, telling him what’s going on. General O’Neill decides to send someone to tail him, and we get…

Dr Daniel Jackson – Scientist and Spy!

OK, I actually think that O’Neill’s decision to use an old SG1 colleague and friend makes perfect sense, because they don’t know who they can trust…

Anyway, It turns out that Rush was right and Telford has been working with the Alliance. Sadly, Daniel Jackson isn’t that good a spy, and the Alliance, having worked out that Rush isn’t Telford, have taken him and gone.

So then we get sequences of Rush being onboard a Lucian Alliance ship, and then later to their base which is on another planet with enough power to dial the Ninth Chevron so that they can get to Destiny. They force Rush to help them ensure all of their calculations are correct…

Meanwhile, on Destiny, Telford is kept locked up and tortured and questioned until he admits that he is the traitor. Young locks the room and slowly starts to vent the atmosphere (well, he orders Brody to vent the atmosphere, who does it despite the shocked looks of Eli and the other scientist guy who’s name eludes me at this point) and…

That’s where the episode ends.

So, in our run-up to the two-part season ender (next week), we’re already in a cliff-hanger situation, what happens if Telford in Rush’s body dies? Does that mean that Rush ends up dead? Or will Rush’s consciousness be permanently embedded in Telford’s body? Will they really kill off their most expensive actor in the season finale? Will the Lucian Alliance reach Destiny? Will we stop being force-fed moments of TJ despairing on what kind of life her as-yet-unborn child will have on Destiny?

My guess? The answers to my questions are as follows: It means Rush dies. Yes. No. Probably not. Probably. Sadly not.

The Good: Performances were all-round excellent, and the moment when Telford admits to being a spy gives genuine chills… good work Lou Diamond Phillips. The recurrence of SG-1 members, O’Neill and Jackson were wonderful, and O’Neill had a couple of beautiful comedy gold moments.

The Bad: I’m fed up with TJ moaning on about her baby already… oh, and once again Eli didn’t have much to do, although I liked that this week, as it shows he’s not involved in absolutely every decision onboard, the way he seemed to be at the start of the series.

Conclusion: 9/10. One of the best yet. Keep it up SG:U!
