As filming nears completion on Doctor Who series nine, Peter Capaldi has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about what fans can expect later this year.

The opening two-part story for series nine The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar has been written by Steven Moffat and feature the return of Michelle Gomez's Missy and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart. On this dramatic return, Capaldi told Entertainment Weekly;

"It places the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being, as well as containing some subtle tributes to the ’60s, and truly wonderful guest performances." He also added that the picture [above] "shows the Doctor about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions.".

Capaldi also went on to talk about his co-stars; on Missy, he said "In the hands of Michelle Gomez, Missy is more magnificently bad than ever before.", guest star Maisie Williams " fantastic. A sharp, talented tornado. As an 18-year-old, she has taught me many new words and expressions. All I’ll say about her character is she shifts in cosmic ways.".

He also confirmed that audiences would be witnessing a slightly different Doctor this year, who is" throwing himself into life with a newfound hunger for adventure. He’s in pursuit of joy and grabbing every thrill that he can along the way." Capaldi went on to tease "I sense him running from something, that even he does not yet understand."

As for the monsters and villains we might expect this series? "There is an epic sweep to this season and I think the villains and monsters reflect that. Great new ones, brilliant old ones, and some very scary creatures looming in stories with real emotional ambition."

Fortunately we won't have to wait too long to watch the series itself. While the BBC have not confirmed a return date - and when have they ever given audiences more than a couple of week's notice? - Doctor Who could be back on our screens in two months time.
