Outlander Preview - @AmazonVideoUK's trump card
Based on the series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander has already received heaps of critical praise on its US debut and has been picked up in the UK by Amazon for broadcast via its Amazon Instant Video service. It has already been picked up for a second season across the Atlantic so the omens are good.
Adapted for TV by Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore, Outlander is a historical time travel tale that sees a nurse from 1945, Claire Randall (played here by Caitriona Balfe), being ripped out of her own time and travelling back to the 18th Century where she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Scottish warrior.
The novels are highly regarded (UK readers may know the first by its UK title, Cross Stitch) and while Ronald D. Moore's sci-fi credentials are certainly suited to the time travel aspects; we did have concerns that his usually futuristic storytelling might be a clash with what is by-and-large a historical drama. Thankfully these concerns were unfounded and from our early impressions we have a remarkably lavish production that remains faithful to the style of Gabaldon's stories.
Amazon have are showing the first eight episodes from today, 26th March, and further episodes will be added to Instant Video weekly from 5th April. We'll be back with a more reviews once we've had a chance to watch the initial batch over the next few days but we're pretty confident that this is as close to a platform seller that Amazon currently have and we reckon you'll be impressed. If there was ever a good time to jump into the Amazon ecosystem, this is it!
