The X Files: 6 new episodes to be filmed this summer
On Sunday we brought news that Fox were close to green-lighting a limited run of new episodes of The X Files, with the aim to resolve the on-going stories from the nine-season series that ran between 1993 and 2002. We didn't expect to get an update so soon; indeed the rumours of an X Files revival first surfaced in January and the latest update was that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were in 'negotiations'.
Well it turns out those negotiations are complete; six new episodes of The X Files will be filmed this summer to be broadcast - we assume - in the 2015/16 TV season. Duchovny and Anderson will both be back as Mulder and Scully too. Series creator Chris Carter we also be back to helm the show and had this to say:
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
Supporting Carter will be Fox Television Group chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden, who appear to be just as enthusiastic about the revival.
“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of ‘The X-Files’ — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again. The X-Files’ was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘The X-Files’ and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
Now all we need is the announcement that other key cast members - including Mitch Pileggi as Skinner - will be returning. What do you think? Is 6 episodes enough? What burning questions do you want answered? Should the series be a mix of mythology and monster of the week episodes or should the series focus on resolving those on-going plot threads?
Here at The Digital Fix, we think the series should do both.
