Agatha Christie, Mapp and Lucia and Lenny Henry at the Beeb

Well the BBC have got into a bit of a drama frenzy with a slate of news about new projects for BBC One. First up, the channel is describing itself as the new home of Agatha Christie with a deal done with Agatha Christie limited to present and dramatise that later crime writer's back catalogue. To start with they are doing "And then there were none" and "Partners in Crime", the latter of which will be over three episodes and feature David Walliams who says "it is our ambition for Tommy and Tuppence to finally take their rightful place alongside Poirot and Marple as iconic Agatha Christie characters". Cue smug Walliams picture....imageDrama Republic are producing a 5 part series called Doctor Foster for the main channel as well. This is written by Mike Bartlett (Cock) and will be set in a rural village where a married GP finds out her husband may be having an affair.

Which brings us to a man beloved of reasonably priced hotel accommodation and sleeping in their lobbies. Danny And The Human Zoo is a one off film dramatising Lenny Henry's childhood and his rise to fame. Adapted from his memoirs, Henry says "although it's not exactly what happened, that we'll get a strong sense of what it might have been like for a young black kid from Dudley to be suddenly hurled into the maelstrom of this business we call show". Following in Laura Linney's Big C steps is Sheridan Smith, who will be starring in a one-off drama called The C Word. This is an adaptation of Lisa Lynch's book about her own fight with cancer and will shoot in May. Lynch died last year but was involved in the adaptation and casting.

Haven't you noticed how quiet is on the Mark Gatiss front? Well to make up for this and to spread the tentacles of the former League of Gentlemen further Steve Pemberton has adapted EF Benson’s Mapp And Lucia novels for the Beeb. It will start shooting in the summer as well.
