Will Poulter cast in lead role on Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series

The new 'prequel' series to The Lord of the Rings has found one of its leads. Variety has reported that Will Poulter has been cast, alongside previously announced actress Markella Kavenagh.

There are no details yet on either character (though Kavenagh's character is rumoured to be called 'Tyra'). What we do know is that the epic series will be set in the 'Second Age' of Middle Earth, long before The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which took place at the end of the 'Third Age' and is likely to following the first War of the Ring.

JD Payne and Patrick McKay will act as showrunners on the series, with J.A. Bayona recently announced as the director or the opening two episodes.
