Confirmed: Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi TV series starring Ewan McGregor is coming to Disney+

Update: It's happening! Kathleen Kennedy and Ewan McGregor confirmed he is to play Obi Wan Kenobi again in a Disney+ series tonight at D23.

It was confirmed that all of the scripts for the new series have been written and will shoot next year.

Kenobi will be set around 7 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith which would place it in exactly the same time period as Solo - maybe we will get to find out more about Darth Mail's ties to Crimson Dawn after all.

Previously:

There have been reports of an Obi Wan Kenobi project being developed at Lucasfilm since nearly the dawn of time. First it was a film that would have followed Rogue One and Solo but when the spin-offs faltered due to bad timing of releases it seemed that Old Ben might be returned to the Tatooine wastelands never to appear on our screens again.

Then Disney+ happened and we had the news that both The Mandalorian and Rogue One's Cassian Andor & K-2SO were getting TV series on Disney's new streaming network. These live action series both opened up the possibility that the Star Wars Stories might jump to the small screen and that we might get some conclusion on the threads that the Solo film left dangling.

Now we're hearing both through rumours on other sites (mostly stemming from a report on Cinelinx) a 'confirmation' from Deadline and also one contact of our own (who excitingly is also the same source of our Star Wars 4K Blu-ray news) that Ewan McGregor has officially signed on to return to his prequel role of Obi Wan Kenobi in his own series.

We no longer consider this to be a rumour - there are too many separate people saying the same thing and we're expecting an official announcement at the D23 Expo which kicks off on 23rd August during a showcase announcing more updates on Disney+.

This news was originally published on 15th August and has been updated with additional confirmations from Deadline and more clarification.
