"I was a massive fan of the show before I got auditioned for the role" We chat with Rochenda Sandall
The fifth series of Line Of Duty has proved that complicated storylines and acronyms abound don't stop people from watching a TV show. Especially if it's one of the best around. One of the key figures of this series has been the shadowy OCG figure of Lisa McQueen, played by Rochenda Sandall. We had the chance to ask Rochenda how she came to be on the show, the best thing about it, and how great Stephen Graham is. (Spoiler: We love him, so does Rochenda).
Hello Rochenda, let's get to it. What do you do for fun?
I walk my lovely staffy who is called Lollypop, I grow vegetables in my allotment at home and I love evenings out in restaurants with my partner Mark Stanley.
Tell us a bit about you, how did you first get into acting?
I performed in Sister Act 2 when I was 16 years old, I didn't want to audition but my friend forced me, and I got the main part! I've had the bug since then.
When was the first time you heard about your role in Line Of Duty?
The first time I heard about Lisa was early August last year.
And what was the process for you being cast?
I did two auditions, the first was with the casting director Daniel Edwards and the director John Strickland, then the recall was all the above plus Jed Mercurio.
How was it walking into a show with so many established actors?
Such a treat, I tried to embrace it and soak in all of the amazing work that was going on around me, I am truly blessed to be working with some of the industries finest artists.
What did you know about the show before the role came up?
Everything. I was a massive fan of the show before I got auditioned for the role.
I love Stephen Graham, how was it working with him?
Me too. I watched all of his work religiously at drama school, and even now it was a dream come true getting to work with him, I had to pinch myself every day.
Do you still learn things from other actors?
Of course, there are so many things to learn in acting always, I'll still be learning when I'm 85.
What’s the best thing about being on Line Of Duty?
The people everyone that work on that show are at the top of their game; a wonderful set of people.
And the worst?
The prawn curry
What’s coming up for you after Line Of Duty?
A Netflix series I am unable to name at this time and an ITV2 zombie apocalypse comedy called Zomboat, and auditioning of course.
How do you feel, know that you’ll always be know for playing Lisa?
I don't mind that at all, it's such a brilliant role.
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
Where are you from? And the answer is Grimsby I am a true codhead!!! Ha ha ha
And, I always finish on this, how do you take your coffee?
Short and strong.
Line of Duty Series 5 and Complete 1 – 5 Box Set are out now on DVD.
