Peladon Comes to DVD - UPDATED with Full List of Extras

2|Entertain's Dan Hall has announced at a convention in London that January's Classic Who release will be a box-set of the two Peladon stories from Jon Pertwee's era.

Originally January was going to see a Peter Davison double bill of The King's Demons and Planet of Fire hitting the shelves. Unfortunately, due to a rights issue that has now been put back until later in the year so instead, it's a swift return for the Third Doctor to the range, following this month's Dalek War set.

EDIT: Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team has now detailed the extras for this release, as detailed below. For more information, check this thread over at Gallifrey Base.

The Curse of Peladon, first broadcast in early 1972 as part of Season 9, sees the Doctor and Jo travelling to the titular planet as it applies for membership to the Galactic Federation. They soon become embroiled in the political machinations of opposing sides, with those who wish to prevent the planet's acceptance going to murderous lengths to achieve their aims. Featuring the Ice Warriors, the famed beast of Peladon Aggedor and the oh-wow-they-really-did-design-it-like-that Alpha Centauri, as well as Patrick Troughton's son David as King Peladon, Brian Hayles's story, which draws parallels with the-then hot political topic of Britain's entry to the Common Market, is a welcome addition to the DVD line.

Extras are as follows:

  • Commentary - With actor Katy Manning, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and production assistant Chris D'Oyly-John. Moderated by Toby Hadoke.
  • The Peladon Saga - Part One (23:24) - Cast and crew recall the making of both Peladon stories. Part one opens with a look at the socio-political climate in the UK in the early seventies and its influence on the storylines. With actors Katy Manning, Donald Gee, Nina Thomas and Ralph Watson, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks, production assistant Chris D'Oyly-John, sound designer Brian Hodgson, visual effects designer Peter Day, costume designer Sylvia James and make-up supervisor Elizabeth Moss. Narrated by David Hamilton.
  • Warriors of Mars (14:54) - a brief history of the Ice Warriors in Doctor Who by the people who designed and brought them to life. With actors Sonny Caldinez, Alan Bennion and Bernard Bresslaw (voice only), producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks, director Michael Ferguson, make-up designer Sylvia James, sound designer Brian Hodgson and visual effects designer Peter Day. Narrated by Donald Gee.
  • Jon and Katy (7:06) - looking back at one of the most fondly remembered Doctor / Companion pairings in the show's history - Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor and Katy Manning's scatty UNIT agent, Jo Grant. With Katy Manning, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks.
  • Storyboard Comparison (2:16) - Comparing visual effects designer Ian Scoones' hand-drawn storyboards for the story's opening sequence with the finished version as seen on screen.
  • Photo Gallery (7:30) - production and publicity photos from the story.
  • Coming Soon - a trail for a forthcoming DVD release.
  • PDF Material - BBC Enterprises sales literature and Radio Times listings in Adobe pdf format for viewing on PC or Mac.
  • Programme Subtitles
  • Subtitle Production Notes

  • Unfortunately its follow-up, The Monster of Peladon, which aired in Spring 1974 as part of Season 11, is more boring. The Doctor, now accompanied by Sarah Jane Smith, returns to the planet fifty years after his last visit to find the planet suffering some industrial strife following a spate of deaths in the mines. The miners claim it's the ghost of Aggedor causing the accidents, but who is really behind the mysterious apparitions? The six-parter has its moments, but is generally not a patch on Curse.

    The extras are as follows:

  • Commentary - stereo. With actors Nina Thomas, Donald Gee, Ralph Watson and Stuart Fell, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and, for episode four only, a commentary by fans Rob Shearman, Mark Aldridge, Kate Du-Rose and Philip Newman. Moderated by Toby Hadoke.
