The Cull of Netflix / Marvel shows continues as Luke Cage is axed after two seasons
Following on from the cancellation of Iron Fist by Netflix and Marvel, the axe has also fallen on fellow superhero series Luke Cage, which has also been cancelled after two seasons.
Like Iron Fist, Luke Cage also aired its second season on Netflix this year, but while it didn't quite hit the critical acclaim of its predecessors Daredevil and Jessica Jones (both of which gained third seasons) it was genuinely much more well received and the cancellation of the show comes as a bit of surprise.
Netflix and Marvel, who decided not to progress with the show despite plans underway for a third season, made the following joint statement:
“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”
This may be the end for Mike Colter's Luke Cage and Finn Jones' Iron Fist, but there's always a chance we could see them in Jessica Jones season three or another run of The Defenders. Unfortunately the team-up series also failed to hit the mark critically and the silence surrounding a second season makes further appearance by both heroes less likely.
