Rosanne spin-off 'The Connors' given series order by ABC
Following last month's cancellation of the Rosanne revival after the star's racist tweets, US network ABC have now developed a spin-off of the popular series without Rosanne Barr herself. Variety has confirmed that the original stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman will appear in the spin-off currently being developed under the working title The Conners. Rosanne Barr will have no input financially or creatively.
A spin-off focused on on Gilbert’s Darlene has been rumoured ever since the cancellation of Rosanne, which has been a huge rating winner for ABC. The issue had been Rosanne Barr herself, who developed the central character she played. ABC had insisted (rightly so) that Barr receive no financial benefit from any continuation of the show.
On the announcement, the cast made the following statement:
“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”
ABC also added the following:
“The Conners’ stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter and love. The spinoff will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.
The new order is for three episodes fewer than that given to the anticipated new season of “Roseanne.”
The Conners will debut with a 10-episode season in the US this autumn.
