Agents of SHIELD renewed for a shorter season six
We're big fans of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD here at The Digital Fix. The show has never been a huge ratings winner for US network ABC, but it has a loyal fan base, particularly after the much improved fourth and fifth seasons. Still, low ratings have meant that it's future has always been in doubt each year, which makes it's season six renewal something of a relief.
Whether season six is the last remains to be seen, but like Gotham (which did announce its next run would be its last), Agents of SHIELD has only been given 13 episodes this time, down on the usual 22 per season.
With the season five finale planning to tie the series into the climatic events of Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers 4 marking the end of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe begun in Iron Man (which saw the debut of Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson) the TV wing of the same universe may decide to clock out at the same time. However ABC have apparently yet to confirm whether season six will be the last.
Meanwhile the somewhat dreadful Inhumans has officially been cancelled after just one poorly-received season. Maybe this is the excuse ABC (who remains committed to develop more Marvel shows on the network) needs to resurrect the much superior Agent Carter?
Agents of SHIELD season five continues on Sundays at 9pm on E4 here in the UK, and you can check out our review of the show's 100th episode here.
