The Expanse cancelled by Syfy after three seasons

The Expanse has been a critical hit, but that acclaim, hasn't been able to save the sci-fi drama from cancellation. Deadline has confirmed that the third season currently airing will be the last.

The show is based on a series of novels by James S.A. Corey (a pseudonym for authors Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham) and is set in a future where humanity has been strung out across the solar system and splintered into various tribes.

The cancellation by Syfy may not be the end for the show, with producer Alcon Television Group making the following statement.

“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy. We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, also added...
The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television. Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse‘s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The final episodes of The Expanse will air this July.
