Singles of the Week

Singles of the Week

Rather than a shared effort, one of the minions at TMF towers will cast their ears over the week’s offering. First up you have me and, in a break from recent tradition, the winner is right up here at the top.

Single of the Week

Nina Nesbitt - Selfies
An ever so slightly self-referential ‘Selfies’ from TMF fave Nina Nesbitt. A bitter sweet take on the modern day obsessions with taking a photograph of oneself. (Personally, I get a friend or lackey to use my old reliable box brownie, but hey, I’m old). Nesbitt’s dulcet tones soothe you in to submission as the perky pop beat pulls you along for the ride. Lovely stuff and with her excellent debut album Peroxide also upon us this could be Nina’s year.

The Rest

Matsuki Ayumu - Cold Kills You
I haven’t got a clue what his saying but it really doesn’t matter as ‘Cold Will You’ is a quirky and thoroughly enjoyable piece of ramshackle Japanese alt-pop that takes that can’t fail to make you smile. More like this please.

Will Varley –Wedding and Wars
The quality from singer-songwritery folkie types can be really hit and miss but the latest from Will Varley is a wonderfully dark and humorous run through of the history of the world in a mere four minutes and is accompanied by a fantastically retro 8 bit gaming video that will find fans among geeks and folkies alike.

Holy Esque – Silences
Normally you can’t beat a nice bit of fuzzed up 80s style jangly guitar indie pop but this latest effort from Glaswegians Holy Esque has a strangely muted arrangement and production that doesn’t let their talents shine through. Better luck next time.

David E. Sugar - Pushing To Be First
What could have been a soothing slice of glacial, gently melodic synth pop is mangled by the hideously over produced vocals. Don’t forget kids, less sometimes really can be more.

The Twang – Larry Lizard
Last, and definitely least, we have the latest opus from 3rd division indie lad rockers The Twang who are still pitching their inexplicably popular wares to a loyal audience. Deathly dull, derivative and utterly forgettable.

That’s your lot for this week, plaudits and brickbats to the usual address.
