Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date, cast, plot, and more news

The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date is coming, bringing a new movie villain to face the Blue Blur and more Sonic characters, and we have all the details.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date

When is the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date? After fans waited decades for Sonic the Hedgehog to come to the big screen, the Blue Blur swiftly proved incredibly popular. So much so, we got one great sequel, and now we’re getting another

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise tracks our favorite hedgehog’s time on Earth. So far, we’ve seen Sonic (Ben Schwartz) take on the evil Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) in two of the best family movies in recent memory. In the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ending, our spiky-haired friend battled it out against Robotnik, met new friends Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’ Shaughnessy), and protected the Master Emerald.

What will come in the next video game movie? We’ve got all the information you need on the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date, so strap in.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date

Sonic 3 will be released on Wednesday, December 20, 2024. The sequel was announced in February 2022, along with a Knuckles spin-off TV series. Considering how much money Sonic’s sequel made, the news of a sequel was hardly surprising.

With the 2023 Actors Strike, many new movies are being delayed, but Sonic 3 is reportedly set to film CGI scenes without on-screen talent in order to make its December release date. Whether this will stave off delays or not will depend on how long the industrial action lasts.

Who’s in the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cast?

For the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, fans will be pleased to learn that our two main pals, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden, are back on board as Sonic and Tom.

Schwartz voices our titular blue hero, Sonic, while Marsden plays Sheriff Tom, Sonic’s best friend. Elba, who voices Knuckles, will also be coming back for the sequel.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey is also set to come back as the adorable yellow fox Miles ‘Tails’ Prower. We can’t have Sonic without his newly formed colorful gang, can we?

Here is the confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cast list:

  • Ben Schwartz as Sonic
  • James Marsden as Tom Wachowski
  • Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails
  • Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski
  • Idris Elba as Knuckles

We can also rest easy knowing that some familiar human faces will be coming back too. Tika Sumpter as Tom’s wife, Maddie, will be back, perhaps along with her lovable sister Rachel, played by Natasha Rothwell. If Rachel is in the film, we may also get to see Shemar Moore again as her fiancé and undercover GUN (the Guardian Units of Nations) agent.

It is all pretty exciting, right? However, there is some heartbreaking news on the casting front for Sonic: Carrey, who has been the perfect Dr Robotnik over the last two Sonic movies, won’t return.

In a 2022 interview, Carrey revealed his intent to retire from acting following Sonic the Hedgehog 2. With this in mind, we don’t expect to see him in the movie in any big capacity. Perhaps a cameo?

What is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 about?

The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 plot is under wraps, but thanks to the Sonic 2 post-credit scene, we can assume Shadow the Hedgehog will be the next antagonist to take on our favorite blue hero.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended with Dr Robotnik being defeated once Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic team up to take him down. After reclaiming the ancient power source, the Master Emerald, from Dr Robotnik’s hands, Sonic and his new family dedicate their lives to looking after the gem. However, it turns out that Dr Robotnik’s body was never recovered – hinting that they could meet the evil genius in the future.

But the post-credits of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also revealed a brand new villain, Shadow the Hedgehog. After cleaning up the mess from Sonic and Dr Robotnik’s last fight, GUN discovered some 50-year-old secret coordinates to an abandoned facility where ‘Project Shadow’ was underway. We see a black hedgehog open his eyes in the teaser clip – ready to cause some chaos.

The character of Shadow was first introduced in the 2001 videogame Sonic Adventure 2 and was created by none other than Dr Robotnik’s granddad, Gerald Robotnik. In the games, Shadow is generally an anti-hero with a dark backstory. But despite his edgy style and attitude, he is normally on Sonic’s side… typically.

However, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, an alliance probably won’t be on the cards for Sonic and Shadow, considering how the franchise is now looking toward a new baddie following Dr Robotnik’s disappearance.

In terms of the human characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, stars Tika Sumpter and Natasha Rothwell in an interview told The Digital Fix what they hope for their characters in the sequel.

Sumpter said, “You see what Rachel and Maddie are capable of, and so I think seeing them in the driver’s seat of the action, even more, would be so incredible. Yeah, I just think it’d be badass and feminist to see sort of what happens when we’re calling the shots. And yeah, I again, I love this franchise so much, and everyone involved that like, it’s just a no-brainer to be a part of.”
