Mahalia and Ella Mai team up to bring us the video for 'What You Did'
Further to her releasing her critically acclaimed debut album ‘Love & Compromise’ last Friday, Mahalia has today unveiled the accompanying video to album single ‘What You Did’. The track features fellow Brit, Ella Mai, and contains portions of Rose Royce’s Whitfield’s iconic hit ‘I’m Going Down’ which was later sampled by US artist Cam’ron for his smash hit ‘Oh Boy’. Produced by Grammy nominated producer, Pop Wansel, ‘What You Did’ sees the two powerhouses sing on the trials and tribulations surrounding infidelity within a relationship.
The visual was directed by British director KC, who was also behind the visual for Mahalia’s previous release, ‘Simmer’’: “The song talks about times when a woman would let a man into her life only for him to cheat or play around and it’s after this that they find strength and empowerment. During the visual, Mahalia joins forces with Ella Mai to show that she is not alone in this feeling. My aim was to create an experimental performance visual with considered camera movements and cinematic feel - paying homage to early 90s RnB music video queen Aaliyah and also the music sample’s origin Cam'Ron – ‘Oh Boy’. I wanted to create something forward thinking, new, and memorable with clever easter eggs and nods to the songs RnB roots.”
Currently enjoying success of her latest summer single ‘Simmer’ featuring. Burna Boy, Mahalia’s debut album ‘Love & Compromise’ is the rich fruit of Mahalia’s developmental journey thus far. On her debut LP Mahalia's playfully infectious spirit intertwines with her youthful charisma, idiosyncratic storytelling and consciousness – attributes that have set her apart from her peers and seen her become one of the UK’s most-loved rising stars. Further production and writing turns come from the likes of Sounwave (Kendrick, St. Vincent, Schoolboy Q), DJ Dahi (Drake, Pusha T), Sam Dew (Zayn, Taylor Swift) and Pop Wansel (Ariana Grande, Alessia Cara) as well as long-time collaborator Maths Time Joy. The record is executively produced by Felix Joseph who helps create the perfect sonic backdrop for Mahalia to shine and the result is a future-classic.
The Leicester native enjoyed an incredible 12 months, quickly becoming one of the year’s most exciting breakthrough artists. She rode fast in her own lane, winning YouTube’s inaugural ‘One To Watch’, and is the only musician to be tipped for both the BRIT’s Critics Choice Award and the BBC Sound Poll shortlists earlier this year. In addition, last week she was honoured within YouTube’s ‘Artist On The Rise’ campaign. Mahalia found success via her uncompromising, buoyant songs such as ‘Sober’ her debut single, and ‘One Night Only’, a single which was taken from her hotly acclaimed 2018 EP ‘Seasons’
