Singles Round-Up: 27th October 2014

Just a quick leg through the few singles we've had this week. It's windy out and there's a real danger the roof might come off the shed.

There's something Gaz Supergrass about the vocals on United Fruit's 'Open Your Eyes', but the music is thrusting modern alt.indie that's unfortunately a little characterless. By contrast, Bullybones's 'I Feel Sorry For You' is spunky garage pop that may not have you reaching for your wallet, but you'd hang around to watch them at 2pm on a festival bill.

It's no surprise to find out that Veronika Vesper has a Czech background, as there's something vaguely Eurovision about her dramatic pop (which throws some Pendulum-style breaks into the mix). May find a home in the arms of long-term t.A.T.u. groupies but not much further. By contrast, Say Lou Lou's 'Games For Girls' is light, fresh and really rather cute. The video implies it's going to be more exciting/interesting than it actually is, but you can't have everything. Honours are this week's male vocal electro pop combo and encroach too far into that whole Nick Kershaw/Howard Jones thing for these ears. My mullet is safely locked away - and it ain't coming out again.

Don't get much reggae-inflected stuff through, so Gentleman's Dub Club is a welcome change. 'Pressure' is a good mix of smoother elements and danceable sections, although some of the edge is smoothed off by a little processed-sounding instrumentation.

No standout track this week.
