Singles Round Up: 23rd November 2014
Another lot of singles to enjoy this week, and surprisingly, most of them aren't that bad!
May as well get stuck in with a modern day indie fayre from House of Lions with their latest single ‘Perfect Fool’. Sounds like Two Door Cinema Club with a summery twist to wish away those wintry blues. Whilst sounding fairly catchy, the hook doesn't quite linger and lacks the punch that many of their recent contemporaries have.
A fairly standard alt-rock effort from Newcastle rockers EnterTheLexicon, which would feel at home in both the pages of Kerrang and NME. Rather akin to Mallory Knox but does its job well enough.
Clocking in at just under two minutes, the Tokyo duo Yokan System deliver a mesmerising electronic track which has the potential to fuel many a clubber’s chemical-induced haze. The pulsing synths and vocals combine to create an almost euphoric feeling, perfect for a dark and dingy club.
A pop-ish affair from Paper Aeroplanes in the guise of ‘Guessing Game’ which will evoke memories of many distant loves with its lyrics about letting go of relationships. The guitar provides a simple backing to the vocals with the solid production allowing the instruments to shine wherever possible.
An enjoyable listen comes from Brooklyn based Lucius and ‘Hey, Doreen’ with its catchy as hell chorus and impressive hooks. The song sounds as if it draws from a million different influences whilst never really sounding like anyone else. Check this one out.
Judging from their new single ‘Gloom’, Kid Wave have a big future ahead of them. With edges of The 1975 and Catfish and the Bottlemen, the London quintet have the right ingredients hit the Radio 1 playlist in no time.
The Belfast born brother and sister duo Southern deliver their new mellow indie number ‘Cool Kid’ with a twinge of The Kooks. Whilst not quite as catchy as the likes of ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’, the slick guitar lines and simple melody genuinely catch the attention.
And now for this week's grand winner: Andy Burrows!
This week’s Single of the Week comes from former Razorlight drummer turned singer songwriter Andy Burrows. With its gentle, Radio 2 friendly sound and Burrows’ almost soulful voice this is the perfect soundtrack for the winter nights.
