Singles of the Week - 25th August 2014
The bank holiday brings with it just a few singles but they seem to have a better hit rate than we're used to...
Kicking off with the latest from The Couresans, 'Genius' offers us a rockier alternative to the increasingingly pop-focussed Paramore. Its harder edged, female fronted rock that doesn't stray into the more ethereal territory that we usually see Lacuna Coil claim as their own. Recommended.
From rock to sugar pop with Sophie Ellis-Bextor and 'The Deer and the Wolf'. As is often the case, scratching away the saccharin coating reveals hidden depths marking this out as one of her strongest tracks in quite some time. She still hasn't strayed too far from the formula of her Groovejet debut.
The Limited offer us some by-the-numbers indie with 'Nightmare' - it's not that it's a bad track. It hits the right balance between catchy and irritating, but it just doesn't really stand out from what is becoming an increasingly crowded central reservation. Jangly guitars? Check. Catchy hooks? Check. The occasional beard? Check... As their name suggests, they do appear to be limited in their deviation from the norm.
