Various - The Bands 06
Perhaps more by luck than design (especially when you consider The Bees' irritating Chicken Payback also features on the previous edition in this series), The Bands 06 turns out to be a decent run through of the sort of acts loved by the serious music buyer. From the irresistable guitar pop of Hard-Fi's Hard To Beat to the moody electronic beauty of Röyksopp's What Else Is There?, there is a decent helping of essential tunes here. Those catching up with Sigur Rós and The Go! Team, thanks to various re-releases and uses in ads, will be glad to see the inclusion of Ladyflash and Hoppípolla, both rather wonderful, of course.
On the downside, there are the usual bores, plus some new additions. Morning Runner's Burning Benches sounds like Coldplay, only more tedious, but that's still nothing on Breaks Co-Op's The Otherside, which easily scoops the prize for the dullest track. One may also be inspired to ask if anybody still buys new records by Placebo or The Charlatans, although the latter's Blackened Blue Eyes, a return to their baggy roots, isn't too bad an effort.
