Various - secretsundaze presents Tobi Neumann
The second volume in the secretsundaze series (the first being mixed by founders, Giles Smith and James Priestly) may start with a relatively accessible summery house track, My Reflection by Osunlade, but it's not long before the descent into bug-eyed repetition and dark basement tunes. Tobi Neumann is a famed producer and DJ on the techno scene; and niggling techno hooks can be found here on the likes of Move D's Quit Quitting and Kerri Chandler's Pong.
Throughout, the emphasis is on rhythm rather than melody. The standout track is Mr. Raoul K's Le Cercle Peul. Heavy with latin percussion and subtle strings, it's like being transported from the dancefloor to some exotic land. You can almost smell the lemon groves. After that, the deep, trippy grooves don't let up much until Neumann winds things down with Jus Ed's faintly eastern Kick It Up Pt.4 and Guillaume's soothingly jazzy Les Gans. A good, atmospheric workout for the more hardened dance fan.
