Various (mixed by Tiesto) - In Search of Sunrise 5: Los Angeles

As you might expect, the fifth compilation in Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise series finds him sequencing a bunch of trance records. More surprisingly perhaps, it's actually very easy on the ears, often reaching a level of heat and blissful beauty to match the evocative L.A. photography on the sleeve.

Disc one concentrates mostly on vocal tracks, highlights being Empty Streets and Karen Overton's cover of Your Loving Arms. Disc two is mainly instrumental. Something Is Wrong recalls Sasha's Xpander with its churning bass and widescreen use of sound - no faint praise. It's the sort of thing you wish the genre would produce more often. The rest of the CD is rather anticlimactic in its wake, although Second Turn is excellent as a straightforwardly uplifting piece.

It goes without saying that trance fans will lap this up. Others may find it pleasantly state-of-the-art and low in tack.
