Various (mixed by Skream) - Watch The Ride
Thanks to Burial's Mercury Music Prize nomination, the term "dubstep", if not the sound, may have crossed into the mainstream. Rest assured, anyone whose experience of dubstep doesn't go beyond Untrue may be knocked sideways by Skream's Watch the Ride mix.
In fact, Skream, one of dubstep's pioneers and most prolific artists, has put together a mix which sounds a world away from Burial's pitched up vocals, garage beats and melodies. The focus is primarily on those menacing "wah wah" basslines, confirming that, in its most unbastardized form, dubstep is perhaps the least friendly genre going, not least because it's dance music that one imagines is almost impossible to dance to. For many, trying to "get into" dubstep will be like trying to break a diamond with a fork. Although there are some tracks here which reach a tentative hand to the outsider - Skream's own If You Know (ambient dubstep?), the burst-of-reggae Soundboy My Target/2 Steps Back V.I.P mash-up and Lateef's apocalyptically beautiful Saw, Sine, Square - this is one for the already converted.
