Various (mixed by Benji B & Glenn Underground) - Need2Soul V.02

Starting out as a deep house club night, Need2Soul eventually found its wings as a record label. Need2Soul V.02 - yes, their second album release - gives a disc each to 1Xtra DJ, Benji B, and the Strictly Jaz Unit's Glenn Underground. The result is two satisfying sets exploring house music and beyond.

Glenn Underground's disc, encompassing mainly mid-tempo jazzy grooves and light, soulful house, sounds like it was made for a day at the poolside. Nick Holder's aptly named Summer Daze is perhaps the most representative track; vaguely cheesy, yet irresistible and sure to have you dreaming of sangria and sunglasses. Frothy, tasteful and undemanding, Underground's mix is reminiscent of one of those Hed Kandi Beach House compilations, only with better quality control.

By contrast, Benji B goes for a nocturnal vibe, taking in gorgeous deep house, techno, ethnic rhythms and straight soul. This makes for more of a journey, but the transitions seem unforced and he includes many a rare or unreleased gem. In particular, Where Would You Be signals Yaw, possessing a timeless, instantly impressive soul voice, a man to be watched. Need2Soul V.02 is worth a listen for this disc alone.
