Various - Kitsuné Maison Compilation 3
The deliberately shit artwork to Kitsuné Maison Compilation 3 may scream underground, but sadly real thrills are in short supply. You want indie? Here's The Lovely Feathers with Frantic, kind of like The Libertines with added xylophone. You want electro house? Hands in the air for Alex Gopher's Motorcycle Wet. You want something in between? Try The World Domination with Galactic Lover; it's like Danger! High Voltage, only even more annoying.
You can imagine kids with funny haircuts going out and getting mashed to such tunes, yet there's little on Kitsuné Maison Compilation 3 that's particularly memorable. The overall feeling is one of The Emperor's New Clothes rather than "fuck me, this is cool". What it demonstrates is that eclecticism alone isn't sufficient and how cliched the "hey, let's appeal to fans of Daft Punk and The Strokes" mindset has become.
Still, there are a couple of tracks that effortlessly wipe the floor with the rest: Freeform Five's punchy Home Wit U, reminiscent of New Order (right down to the vocals), and Soulwax's touching up of Gossip's Standing In The Way of Control for the dancefloor. Both sound mighty and may persuade you into parting with your cash.
