Various - Acoustic Songbook
Featuring tracks from the last half century, Acoustic Songbook attempts to capture as wide an audience as possible by casting its net as wide as the title will allow. However, by trying to please everyone, it's unlikely to please anyone 100%.
There's fifties rock 'n' roll (Eddie Cochran), the expected glut of classic songwriters (John Lennon, Nick Drake), current huge global acts (Coldplay, Radiohead), a few new jazzers (Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum), and plenty to wear a woolly jumper to. Amongst all this, it's nice to see the compilers have made the effort to find alternative versions of a few tracks (The One I Love, Fake Plastic Trees).
Unfortunately, even before one reaches the horribly bland Heartsong (which I seem to recall as the theme to some TV show), there's the sense that this beefy three disc collection is diluted with filler. A decent amount of undisputably great material has been included, but expect to skip and listen in equal proportion. Still, if you're looking for neutral Christmas day music (or a present for the relative who buys only one CD a year), this should satisfy.
