Titan - Sweet Dreams

Whoooooooooosh! Brooklyn krautrockers Titan are finally back with their sophomore effort Sweet Dreams – and sweet they are indeed. Kraut/space rock is often much maligned for being the domain of drug-addled, delusional hippies, but Titan are leading an ever-growing wave of bands that are reclaiming the genre as a musical tour-de-force, and the spectacular aural fireworks enclosed in the mere 40 minutes of Sweet Dreams will advance this no end.

The title track opens things up by launching the listener straight into the outer reaches of the universe, the proper old-fashioned synthesizers and heavy, crunching guitars swirling around each other like a pair of twin stars;. This synchronicity is the prevailing aspect throughout Sweet Dreams, as both synths and guitars act as the lead instrument simultaneously, yet one never dominates the other. The rhythm section of drummer Dave Liebowitz and illustrious bassist Steve Moore drives the tracks along with a motorik ferocity reminiscent of NEU! and Ash Ra Tempel at their best.

Where Titan have most markedly improved since A Raining Sun Of Light & Love, For You & You & You is the consistency and sustained maniacal musicianship, right from the first note until the last vestiges of ‘Maximum Soberdrive’; at no point in Sweet Dreams do you wish the song would just hurry up and get to the next section, every part is exquisitely constructed and an absolute joy to listen to. And joy is such an apt word in this case, as you cannot help but be lifted by the madcap ecstasy of Titan in full flight – whoooooooooosh!
