The Eels - Meet The Eels - Essential Eels & Useless Trinkets

For well over a decade, Mark Oliver Everett has been writing songs. Songs about Love, Life, Death…incredibly thought provoking and inspirational stuff from a man that has had to cope with the deaths of his closest family members. Everett (a.k.a. E) used these tragic events to create tunes that should be incredibly depressing, songs that tackle incredibly sensitive topics, be it cancer, suicide, but no, E has an ability to sing about the most sombre of subjects, and make the song become something of hope, a message for others to gain great strength from. A fascinating combination of sad lyrics and happy music.

So with an album and a half of new material ready to be released, there is no better time for this decade long chapter to be brought to a close. E has offered an invitation for you to “Meet the Eels”.

E and DreamWorks have created a fantastic sample of The Eels’ output from the previous 14 albums. It’s important to note that E was involved in this release; he helped choose the tracks and has written notes to accompany them. This is an ideal set for fans new and old. E classes this CD as an Invitation to the party, a taster of the E universe.

24 tracks in chronological order, the Eels interpretation of Missy Elliot’s Get Ur Freak On has to be heard to be believed, and one of several contributions to the Shrek films soundtrack, I Need Some Sleep.

An extra special bonus for the more avid fan (thought not exclusively aimed at) is the Useless Trinkets set, a 2 disc collection of b-sides (E hates that term, he states these particular songs just do not fit onto any particular album), rarities and live tracks. The “b-sides” are not inferior material (or filler), they hold up really well to the material on the Essential cd!

Highlights within the massive 50 tracks on this set include cover versions of I Put a Spell on You, Dark End of the Street, if I was Your Girlfriend. Several unique live performances make this set unmissable.

Essential Eels and Useless Trinkets are triumphs, a must for anyones collection. Buy it, or Bobby Jr will be after you!

Both Meet the Eels and Useless Trinkets have been remastered.

The retail versions for both sets include an extra DVD. The Essential Eels DVD contains 12 promotional videos. Useless Trinkets has Eels live at Lollapalooza 2006.
