Samon Kawamura - Translations

"I'm not a friend of excess lengths. There definitely is music out there that needs eight minutes. But I prefer it if the same thing can be said in two." It's a telling statement from the half German, half Japanese Samon Kawamura. His debut album Translations is full of chilled breakbeats and varying textures: jazz instruments, hip hop scratching, cut up vocals, even a didgeridoo.

Unfortunately, tracks average a length of around three minutes, with virtually nothing beyond a stuck groove or undeveloped idea. Although nicely produced, the result is like a sampler CD, where compositions fade out just as one might hope they'd get going. Shame.
