Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats - Tearing At The Seams

A smash first single like 'S.O.B' is a blessing and a curse. Most fail to hit those heady heights, some don't try. Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats fall into the second category, but that's a conscious choice. Their debut album swathed 2015 in a blues-rock haze, not heard on a since Alabama Shakes three years before. On its follow-up Tearing At The Seams the band double down on the funk and steer clear of anything resembling a radio hit.

What that means though is that they've got a shot at longevity. Opener 'Shoe Boot' takes its time getting set and into its stride, 'Say It Louder' wears a mellow groove well while the wonderful 'Hey Mama' builds from a quiet beginning into something special. Rateliff and co. have enough quality to deliver their second album with very little concerns. Building on their debut, it'll please admirers and shows the band are the real thing.

Overall

A strong second effort from a band angling for authenticity and longevity.
