Louis Brennan - Dead Capital

Singer-songwriters are all the rage these days and arguably have the hardest task in any musical genre; the art of keeping audience attention with the minimum of instrumentation, generally just a guitar and a voice. The likes of Ed Sheeran have made their fortune with this simple setup and others have invariably followed. With even fewer bells and whistles than Ed, London based Dubliner Louis Brennan brings a soul-bearing voice and a strong lyrical outlook to the table.

Dead Capital'sd opener 'Airport Hotel' sees Brennan bringing not only heartfelt emotional resonance but also lyrics akin to the great consummate storytelling of songwriters gone by like Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen. Telling a story with lyrics like "I mouthed the words repeatedly / if you knew how much you mean to me" With his cracked baritone present throughout, the song tells of an encounter which leaves both characters wanting more, the song a strong mix of vocals, folk guitar, and beautiful melancholic strings. With the song being a great basis for the rest of the album Brennan attacks everything from hipsters, on the minimal but anger fuelled 'Silence', to inconsiderate partners on 'Selfish Lover'.

An introspective look at emotions we all feel at times, Brennan takes us on a journey into our darkest places but with a yearning sense of self-deprecation and an understanding that things will get better. Lyrically razor-sharp, bittersweet and often full of surprising humour, Dead Capital ticks all the boxes for fans of Americana.

A record for all the hopeless romantics out there.
