Johan Gielen - Revelations

As with many a European trance-DJ-turned-artist, Johan Gielen struggles to mark out original territory. Still, Revelations, his debut album, is surprisingly broad in scope, exploring trance in its various forms, from atmospheric opener, Kuredu Express, to the harder likes of Show Me What You Got.

At times, Gielen can't stop himself from this genre's equivalent of stepping in turd: Physical Overdrive and Moments include disinterested vocals and Rock Your Dream some really stinky guitar soloing. Balancing these are Okinawa Sunset, relatively warm and lush, and C Me Trippin, a dancefloor beast spiked with monstrous hooks. Otherwise it's all rather typical, but certainly rousing enough for your average rave monkey.
