Fun Lovin' Criminals - Classic Fantastic

Album titles can suggest many things. Something poetic. Something nonsensical. Something eponymous. Then sometimes you think it’s a subtle form of brainwashing. Keep saying positive adjectives and you’ll subliminally start believing the title is some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. Well, before we begin it is worth clearing up two key points: firstly, this album is not fantastic. Neither is it classic. No matter how big you write it on the cover.

FLC’s discography to date includes six studio albums and no less than four Best Of and rarities collections. Album number six comes after a hiatus of nearly five years and over 14 since ‘Come Find Yourself’ reached the heady heights of number seven in the UK album charts. Whilst many bands kicking around at the death-rattle of Britpop have since shuffled off the musical coil the Brooklyn three-piece have persevered and showed a remarkable commitment to continuing their musical output.

Despite it being a good decade since their heyday they still clearly have some connections, roping in Roots Manuva on ‘Keep On Yellin’’ and somewhat more bizarrely comedian Paul Kaye on ‘Conversations With Our Attorney’. Their obsession with their hometown remains along with liberal swearing and Bloodhound Gang meets Barry White funk. ‘We, The Three’ even bears a passing resemblance to Will Smith.

This may be a band whose star has plummeted somewhat in recent years but their musical legacy can be heard by picking up anything by 3OH!3 or Iglu and Hartley. If you’re a fan you’re bound to get the joke, but no-one else is likely to pay much attention.
