Edwyn Collins - Losing Sleep

The northern soul stomp of the title track soon dispels any concerns you may have had over Edwyn Collins' ability to bounce back from his life threatening health issues. In fact, such is the vibrancy on show here it's tempting to suggest a spot of enforced recuperation might do us all a bit of good.

Much feted in his absence, Collins has secured the services of a veritable Who's Who of indie luminaries to lend vocal and song-writing duties, the Buzzcock punk of 'What Is My Role', with The Cribs's Ryan Jarman the first of a fistful of top quality efforts that include 'Do It Again' with the unmistakable stamp of Alex and Nick Franz Ferdinand and, perhaps most surprisingly, the spine-tingling 'In Your Eyes' with whatshisname from The Drums. Throw in input from Johnny Marr, Romeo from Magic Numbers and Roddy Frame and, well, if a bomb went off when that lot were in the same room, it'd be a bit of a sad day - mostly.

The template doesn't stray much from his more recently favoured indie-soul, with a couple of lower-key acoustic efforts rounding things off and the subject matter is reflective ("I don't feel as close to God as you do everyday" - 'What Is My Role') without ever making specific reference to his troubles.

There'll be nothing else in 2010 more deserving of your credit card details than this. Welcome back, Sir.
