Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here

This new album from British doom-turned-art rockers Anathema has been long in the making. Their last album A Natural Disaster was released way back in 2003, so We’re Here Because We’re Here was always going to be a key album in their career. Would the seven years between records do them harm, or would it return them as a newly reinvigorated band?

Thankfully for them, for the most part this has done the latter. There’s an epic scope to the album which draws the listener in and this is none more evident than on the opening two tracks. ‘Thin Air’ is an urgent, driving and soaring piece, propelled by the brilliant vocals of Vincent Cavanagh and ably backed by the dulcet tones of Lee Douglas. Her vocals really come to your attention on the stunning ‘Summernight Horizon’, as they entwine with Vincent’s and rise out of the melodic barrage of guitar and drums.

The slightly plodding and cheesy ‘Dreaming Light’ disappoints but it picks up again with the eight-minute long ‘A Simple Mistake’, recalling the proggier moments of Opeth. These longer tracks towards the end of the album give the band a chance to really stretch themselves, incorporating strings, electronics and demonstrating a real passion to their song-craft. Occasionally the band drift into a mid-tempo canter which can sometimes prove a little dull as on closing track ‘Hindsight’, but for the most part this is an impressive and well executed return from one of British metals most respected acts.
