Ammoncontact - With Voices

With Voices, the third album from Ammoncontact, is a huge progression from the unfocused instrumental doodlings of their debut. (Okay, I admit I missed the second...) This time out the duo collaborate with a number of underground hip hop artists, and the results fit neatly into the more progressive side of the genre. Into 77 and the title track, for example, have more in common with the work of producers such as Dan the Automator and Danger Mouse than 50 Cent. (A good thing, obviously.)

It's not all hip hop, however. Worth It and Earths Children are of a more soulful nature. The former has some funky slap bass. The latter is an intensely evocative piece featuring the lovely voice of one Mia Doi Todd, just the sort of thing for listening to on a hot day while under the shade of a tree. Elsewhere, Elevations makes for a cool instrumental.

With Voices requires no buff torsos and bikini clad bimbos to compensate; there's no shortage of musical invention here. Fans of the likes of Gorillaz, Roots Manuva and even DJ Shadow are advised to give it a go.
