Wolfmother - Victorious

After weathering the storm of break -ups and line up changes, Wolfmother return to what they do best with their fourth album Victorious. Produced by uber producer Brendan O' Brien the title is almost a statement of intent from leader and frontman Andrew Stockdale. The musical landscape from the record is varied but laser focused. Starting with the Sabbath-esque wail of 'The Love That You Give' that style and energy permeates the record from front to back.

The music is out of this world with the lead single title track showing the enigmatic frontman wielding a guitar spewing lasers in a Barbarellaesque world. It's nice to see the band not taking at least the music video seriously; letting their hair down and having a bit of fun. The stand out track is 'The Simple Life', it's energy, groove and stomp stands out amongst the other nine tracks. Stockdale wails away in voice and guitar - as well as strapping on the bass - though he knows when to slow things down as on 'Pretty Peggy' which though sailing close to a ballad still has bite and venom. It's a welcome breather.

The frontman on the record is backed by a solid rhythm section with former REM drummer Joey Waronker and musical hitch-hiker Josh Freese (who's played with everyone from Nine Inch Nails to The Vandals) hitting the drums. In conclusion, this is definitely a return to form for Wolfmother. If you are a fan of scuzzy, electrifying riffs mixed with Sabbathesque vocals, Victorious is an excellent starting point for 2016.

A welcome return for the Aussie rockers.
