Waldner - Found & Lost
The lyrics on this debut from Canadian-born singer-songwriter David Waldner display a definite sense of melancholy and longing but their power is often lost in some unnecessarily fussy and upbeat arrangements that really don’t fit the subject matter. Fortunately there are occasions where the desire to let rip has been reigned back, with the stripped backed guitar of ‘Heaven Only Knows’ and piano-led ‘Wilderness’ being genuinely interesting and moving. It’s just a shame that the restraint shown on these couldn’t have been replicated throughout the album because, if it had, we could be looking at a genuine contender in the already packed singer-songwriter field. As it is, Found & Lost is a pleasant enough way of passing the time but an album that is unlikely to live long in the memory.
