Various - Norman Jay presents Good Times 30

It’s thirty years since Norman Jay began his Good Times party at the annual Notting Hill Carnival, his plan being to bring some soul to what was mainly a reggae event. Good Times 30 is an eclectic set of uplifting black music, 16 tracks plucked from various genres and periods. The first half sticks to straight soul and disco, although sometimes with a twist: the version of 'I Believe In Miracles' is by its writer Mark Capanni rather than the more famous recording by The Jackson Sisters, while 'My Girl' is present as a (rather unnecessary) cover by Italian soul singer Mario Biondi. The second half sees Jay genre hop from reggae to hip-hop to world. Best, however, are Curtis Mayfield’s 'Victory' and the catchy piano house-jazz hybrid of The Detroit Experiment’s 'Think Twice' (Henrik Schwarz Remix). A fine, if rather random, selection of tunes.
