Various Artists - The Flowerpot Sessions

The Flowerpot sessions is the second compilation album from those fine people at Communion, pet project of Mumford and Sons' keyboardist Ben Lovett. Recorded open mic style at the now defunct Kentish Town pub The Flowerpot, it is a panorama of the current who's who of the London folk scene. Like its predecessor, it's chock full of pretty folk ballads by artists you may or may not have heard of. Lissie makes an appearance with the rather bland 'Oh Mississippi' but Kill It Kid and Joker And The Thief's rockin' blues number 'Something Funny' kicks the door open in fine style. Other highlights include the lovely 'It's About Time' by Treetop Flyers, the truly bizarre (and slightly disturbing) folk version of the Greece standard 'You're The One That I Want' as interpreted by Damien Rice and Angus & Julia Stone and the gorgeous 'Beneath The Sea' from Matthew And The Atlas with help from Marcus Foster and others. A lovely diverse collection with more surprises than you might expect from a "folk album".
