&U&I - Light Bearer

&U&I's debut album Light Bearer is yet more evidence that noisy British rock music is in better health than it’s ever been. With a sonic scope and ambition that belies their mere three members, this record sees the band flowing effortlessly from the more typical, post-punk assault of ‘To The Water Now Is The Hour’ to the ethereal, almost-acapella that is the haunting ‘Super Five’.

The run of tracks that starts off with that latter song marks a point where the band really start to explore the reaches of their sound, as guitars weave in amongst unpredictable percussion on ‘Accordingly In Motion’ and the gloomily triumphant strains of ‘Baskerville The Atheist’. As the rapture-inspired ‘Belly Full Of Fire & A Heart Full Of Band’ demonstrates, these guys manage to inject their songs with plenty of interesting, almost proggy ideas without losing any of the hooks. Another win this year for inventive British rock.
