Toddla T - Watch Me Dance
23-year-old Toddla T’s sophomore album begins with a bang. 'Watch Me Dance', featuring the hefty vocals of Roots Manuva, is a supremely confident party starter; its live feel having more in common with funk than anything going on in the UK urban scene. (The track also features in a different version on Roots’ own forthcoming album.) Track two and lead single, 'Take It Back', is rather good also: coming in on an old-skool piano riff and a sweet female vocal provided by Shola Ama, it’s perfectly suited to both club and radio. Front-loading with the best stuff, however, is a common trick these days. The rest of the album meanders mix-style through dubstep and other bass-heavy urban sub-genres, while semi-squandering various guest vocalists (including Ms Dynamite and Roisin Murphy). It’s occasionally diverting, but undoubtedly disappoints after such a strong opening.
