The Whip - Wired Together

Second album from the Manchester indie dance outfit throws up few surprises. Yes, they're popular with the locals but so is Robinsons bitter and, to be frank, The Whip's processed beats are starting to sound just as flat.

It's hard to see just where this fits. The rasping vocals and unadorned backing tracks are just a bit too Stereo MCs for 2011, a bit too Madchester-by-numbers. With healthy pockets of daring and reinvention busting out all over, not least within the dance scene (if not necessarily the UK indie scene), Wired Together lacks identity daring. It's the sound of a band holding onto a tired template.
