The Rifles - No Love Lost

Can it really be ten years since The Rifles released debut album No Love Lost? Who, aside from their mums, will remember? File it under 'not exactly a game changer' even within that whole indie/mod axis. Contemporaries The Ordinary Boys and Hard-Fi don't trouble radio playlists either, although you might find them propping up the bill at a regional festival. Still The Rifles hang on. Will this re-release of their debut remind us their virtues? Or is it just a simple reminder to the early days when they could call on Ian (Lightning Seeds) Broudie to produce?

Re-listening to the album doesn't ignite any nostalgic joy in the same way that Pulp's His Or Hers or Arcade Fire's Funeral does. But the album is full of mod revivalist passion and comes with hooks and riffs a-plenty - ideal for that hop on the scooter down to Brighton. Stand out tracks 'Local Boy' and 'She's Got Standards' are still as instantly enjoyable as ever, and the sound couldn't exactly date as it was already rich in references to the 60s and 70s when produced. The re-issue does come with the usual expanded versions with the three disc version having various demos and remastered tracks. Will this add an extra shot into the arm of The Rifles? Probably not. But it is a nice way to round up their short career, if this is farewell.

Passionate mod revival, but fails to spark much in the way of nostalgia.
