The Family Rain - Under The Volcano

The UK has its own version of Kings Of Leon, though hopefully a less dysfunctional one. Bath band The Family Rain deliver their own winsome brand of blues-infused rock that, all in all, fares pretty well. And though they may not attain the heights of the Followill clan at their best, they should still do alright. Already making a name for themselves with some big festival appearances and name-dropping opening slots (Miles Kane, Jake Bugg), this pleasing debut should garner even more fans and keep them on the straight and narrow path to rock and roll glory.

There's nothing really earth-shattering with the trio's debut Under The Volcano. It's your garden variety meaty, bluesy, shouty rock formula, yet the catchy tunes hold up well thanks in part to the musicianship and strong vocals. Opener 'Carnival', with its funky guitar intro, starts things off nicely and 'Feel Better (FRANK)' has a nice spring in its step. While the ineffectual 'Trust Me I'm a Genius' falls flat, the cool 'Don't Waste Your Time' and Reason To Die' more than make up for it. Big kudos however go to the nifty 'Binocular'; here the boys stop trying so hard to rock out and deliver a first-rate ditty that is already a crowd-pleasing sing-along favourite at their live shows.
