The Clash - Rude Boy Blu-Ray

Although a nominally embarrassing footnote in the career of The Clash, Jack Hazan and David Mingay's Rude Boy movie remains a worthwhile document both of the band at the peak of their live prowess and as a record of the social landscape of late 1970s Britain. The documentary footage, mostly filmed at Scottish dates on the 1978 summer tour, and at the iconic Rock Against Racism event in Victoria Park' London the previous April are thrilling (although - shock! horror! - the music was later tidied up in the studio) but less successful are the surrounding elements featuring the queasy adventures of roadie Ray Gange and a shoe-horned sub-plot featuring a young pickpocket. Neither the band, nor critics were impressed (a journalist from The Observer was moved to punch Mingay in the face after seeing it) but it remains a must-see for students of the era.

This new blu-ray edition has scrubbed up pretty well and comes with a raft of supporting material including deleted scenes, an audio commentary and interviews with Hazan, Mingay, Gange and road manager Johnny Green. The disc even gives you the opportunity to 'Just Watch The Clash', skipping the fictional aspects. Nose around and you'll find it on sale for less than a tenner, and at that price it'd be rude not to.

A must-see for students of the era.
