The Big Eyes Family Players - Family Favourites
The Big Eyes Family Players are perhaps best known for being James Yorkston’s backing band on the excellent Folk Songs. They (not that there’s a consistent line-up) formed in 1999 with the aim of making classical music, this despite knowing little about the genre. Family Favourites is an entirely instrumental work and although best categorised as folk, there are some interesting twists: 'Amateur Dramatics' is a heady gothic waltz, violin just on the right side of screechy; 'Fast, Loose And Lovely' employs jazz drumming and has a spy theme feel, while still managing to be folksy. It’s hard to fault the playing, which sometimes borders on the psychedelic, but one can’t help thinking Family Favourites would be better with some images to enrich.
