Tennis - Small Sound

Good things come to those fans of perfect indie-pop who wait. Available to US fans since last November, the Small Sounds EP from Denver duo Tennis finally makes a big sound on our humble isles and provides a perfectly compact soundtrack for the summer to come - whatever Andy Murray may be up to. A small but captivating successor to Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley's 2012 sophomore album Young and Old, itself a fantastic fusion of pure pop and lo-fi rock, Small Sounds delivers on previous promise but is let down solely by the fact it's only five tracks long.

From the opening neo-nostalgic soul swing of 'Mean Streets', which playfully switches hooks halfway through, Moore (the 'wife' component of this husband-and-wife partnership) guides us through pop melodies elevated with ease thanks to her soulful caress of a voice. Think Beach House at the beach, hopped up on serotonin and old Motown records. At one point, Moore delivers the line "Singin' just for the thrill", but the sweep of the music itself - all handclap beats, bouncy keys, retro guitar and girl group 'na na na' harmonies - makes more than just the vocals a thrill. 'Cured of Youth' and '100 Lovers' in particular are gems that encompass an eternal summer in song form, and will be enough to satisfy until that third album proper.
